I Almost Had My Son’s Best Friend Removed From His Funeral Because of What He Wore

Part 7: The Note That Taught Me to Listen Before Judging

Jack had written something about me that I couldn’t stop thinking about.

In his note, he had included a little message for Theo: “If Mom looks mad, give her thirty seconds. She’s nice when she has all the information.”

When I learned about those words, I couldn’t help but smile through my tears. Even in a situation he could never have imagined fully, Jack had understood me well enough to know that I might react before I understood what was happening.

He had known I would need time.

But he had also believed that, once I had all the information, I would be able to see the truth.

And he had been right.

I had looked at Theo’s red dress and seen disrespect. I hadn’t seen the promise behind it, the friendship that had carried them through some of the hardest moments of their lives, or the love that had brought Theo to the funeral despite knowing people might judge him.

Jack had understood something I was only beginning to learn: the truth can change the way we see people, but sometimes we need to give ourselves time to hear it.

I still miss my son every day. There are moments when I wish I could ask him one more question, hear one more joke, or simply sit beside him and listen to him talk about his life.

I cannot bring him back, and I cannot change the mistakes I made while he was here. But I can carry something forward from what happened at his funeral.

I can remember that people grieve differently. I can remember that love doesn’t always look the way we expect it to. And I can remember that judging someone before hearing their story can mean missing the most important part of who they are.

Theo kept his promise to Jack. And in doing so, he taught me something my son had apparently known all along: sometimes, all it takes is a little truth and a little time to help us become kinder.

And sometimes, the people we judge too quickly are the ones who have the most important story to tell.

If this story touched your heart, there’s another story worth reading: a woman who spent years raising her seven siblings discovers that her oldest sibling has been keeping a secret about their parents. What she learns changes everything she thought she knew about her family.
