Part 3: The Note That Changed Everything
Theo took a shaky breath and began reading Jack’s note. His voice cracked on the first few words, and the room grew quiet as everyone listened.
He explained that the red dress wasn’t meant to be a joke or an attempt to get attention. It was something Jack had asked him to do, a promise between two best friends who had shared more than most people could ever understand.
As Theo continued reading, I felt the anger inside me begin to shift. I still didn’t understand why Jack had chosen something so unusual, but I could hear the love behind the request.
Theo wiped his eyes and looked at me.
“I know this is hard to understand,” he said. “But Jack wanted me to do this for him. I couldn’t let him down.”
For the first time that day, I really looked at Theo. Beneath the red dress was a young man who had lost his best friend. He wasn’t trying to make a statement. He was trying to honor someone he loved.
I wanted to say something, but the words wouldn’t come.
Then Theo’s voice broke completely. He lowered the note and stood there, fighting to hold himself together.
I could see how much it had cost him to walk into that room dressed the way he was. He had known people might laugh, judge him, or misunderstand him. He had come anyway because he had given Jack his word.
And suddenly, I realized that while I had been thinking about what other people would say, Theo had been thinking about keeping a promise to my son.
I stepped closer to him. My anger had not disappeared entirely, but it no longer felt as important as it had a few minutes earlier.
I reached out and hugged him.
Theo broke down in my arms, crying in a way he had clearly been trying to avoid all morning. I held him while he grieved, and for the first time since Jack’s death, I understood that I wasn’t the only person who had lost someone irreplaceable.
When I finally stepped back, I nodded for him to continue.
Whatever Jack had wanted his best friend to say or do that day, I was going to let him finish.
