Instructions:
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the warm milk, beaten egg, and melted butter.
- Gradually add the liquid mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
- Roll the dough out to about 1/2 inch thickness. Using a round cookie cutter, cut out circles of dough. Spoon a small amount of jelly or preserves onto one half of each circle, then fold the other half over to create a half-moon shape. Pinch the edges to seal.
- In a large, heavy-bottomed pot, heat the oil to 350°F (180°C). Fry the donuts in the hot oil for about 2 to 3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.
- Drain on paper towels. Dust with confectioners’ sugar, if desired. Serve warm.
Enjoy your delicious, old-fashioned jelly donuts!
